The APEC CEO Summit 2026 brings around 1,000 business and government leaders to Shenzhen on 17 and 18 November, one day before the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting opens in the same city. For most delegates, the sessions are the easy part. The harder part is the trip around them: visas, border crossings, hotel bookings, payment apps and daily movement in a city that will be far busier than usual.
This guide covers what business travellers need to sort out before they fly, and how to keep the week running smoothly once they land.
What the APEC CEO Summit 2026 Is and Who Attends
The China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) hosts the summit. It runs alongside the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which takes place in Shenzhen on 18 and 19 November 2026. Published topics include the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, connectivity, artificial intelligence and sustainable development.
Attendance works by application. CCPIT reviews each request through the official summit website, and organisers expect about 1,000 political and business representatives from APEC economies. Apply only through official channels, and keep your confirmation handy, since you may need it for visa and hotel bookings.
The Leaders’ Meeting itself is closed to the public. Most business visitors will attend the CEO Summit, side events and private meetings that cluster around the same week.
Shenzhen Business Travel: Why APEC Week Is Different
On a normal week, Shenzhen business travel runs smoothly. The city has a modern metro, wide roads and a large stock of international hotels. APEC week changes that picture. Heads of government, ministers and their delegations all arrive within a few days, and authorities usually bring in security measures and traffic controls around official venues.
Expect three things:
- Higher hotel demand, especially in Futian, the central business district
- Road controls near official venues, which local authorities announce closer to the date
- Longer journey times at peak hours, particularly when motorcades move
Build a buffer into every plan. A meeting that sits a short drive away on a normal day may take far longer during summit week, so leave early and keep a contact number for each host.
Check Your Visa Route Early
China’s entry rules depend on your passport. The country now offers visa-free entry to ordinary passport holders from a growing list of countries. It also runs a 240-hour visa-free transit scheme for eligible travellers who pass through to a third country, and Guangdong province, which includes Shenzhen, falls within that scheme.
Indian passport holders generally need a visa for China, so start the application as soon as CCPIT confirms your summit place. Travellers with an APEC Business Travel Card should check that their card carries pre-clearance for China. Rules change often, so confirm the current position with the Chinese embassy or consulate before you book flights.
Getting There: Shenzhen Airport or Hong Kong?
You have two main gateways, and each one changes how your first day feels.
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) sits west of the city and serves a growing list of international routes. From the airport, Futian is roughly 35 minutes away by metro, while road transfers depend on the traffic at that hour.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) offers far more long-haul connections. From Hong Kong, high-speed trains run from West Kowloon to Shenzhen in under 20 minutes, and several land control points handle road traffic.
| Route | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Fly direct into SZX | A simple arrival with no border | Fewer long-haul options |
| HKG plus high-speed rail | Long-haul travellers with light luggage | Two sets of formalities and station transfers |
| HKG plus road crossing | Groups, VIPs and heavy luggage | Most travellers switch vehicles at the border |
Cross-border vehicle permits between Hong Kong and the mainland are limited, so most visitors change cars at the control point. If you take this route, arrange a meet-and-greet on both sides. Where to Stay in Shenzhen During APEC Week
Your hotel choice shapes the whole week, so weigh travel time as carefully as price.
Futian is the default base. It holds the central business district, many international hotels and strong metro links. It will also see the most demand and the heaviest security activity.
Nanshan hosts many technology companies and sits roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Futian by metro. It suits delegates who plan meetings with tech firms in the area.
Luohu sits next to the Lo Wu crossing and offers more choice at lower prices, which helps teams that move between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
Book as early as you can, and read cancellation terms closely. Many hotels tighten their policies during major summits.
Payments and Connectivity
Two practical issues catch many first-time visitors to mainland China.
Payments: China runs largely on mobile payments through Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both apps now accept many foreign bank cards, so set them up and test them before you leave home. Carry some cash as a backup, since small vendors often prefer QR payments.
Connectivity: Google, WhatsApp and many other Western services do not work on mainland Chinese networks. Some international roaming plans and travel eSIMs route data outside the mainland, so check with your provider before you travel. Agree on a backup contact method with your team and your chauffeur, such as a local phone number.
Weather and What to Pack
Shenzhen in mid-November usually feels warm and fairly dry by Indian winter standards, with mild evenings. Pack light business wear, a thin layer for air-conditioned rooms and comfortable shoes for long venue walks. Keep printed copies of your summit confirmation, hotel booking and visa pages in your bag, in case your phone loses signal.
Moving Around: Metro, Ride-Hailing or a Dedicated Car?
Shenzhen’s metro covers most business areas, and DiDi offers ride-hailing with in-app translation. For a single traveller with a light schedule, these options work well.
Senior delegations need more control. A dedicated chauffeur-driven car on daily disposal waits outside each meeting, keeps documents and samples secure, and adapts when sessions overrun. It also removes much of the language barrier, since you can send addresses in Chinese to the transport team in advance.
For larger groups, a mix works best. Use sedans for leaders, vans for staff and samples, and fixed shuttle times between hotels and venues. Plan airport runs separately, since team members rarely land on the same flight.
Side Trips Across the Greater Bay Area
Many delegates use APEC week to visit partners elsewhere in the Greater Bay Area. Guangzhou sits roughly half an hour away by high-speed train, and Hong Kong is a short rail ride south. If you plan these trips, book train tickets early, carry your passport for every journey, and arrange a car at each end so you do not lose time at the station.
