Search “car rental in India” and you get two completely different products wearing the same name. One hands you a key and a security deposit. The other hands you a door held open. They are priced differently, insured differently, regulated differently, and they suit genuinely different trips.
We should be upfront: KTC does not offer self-drive rentals. We have been a chauffeur-driven operator since 1943. So read this as a guide written by people who know exactly where their own service is the wrong answer — because for a fortnight in Goa on your own schedule, it usually is.
The short answer
Take a self-drive car when the driving is the holiday, you are staying local, and you are comfortable being liable for the vehicle. Take a chauffeur when your time is worth more than the fare, when the route crosses state lines, or when arriving well matters — a client meeting, a wedding, an airport run at 4am.
What self-drive actually costs beyond the advertised rate
The headline day rate on a self-drive booking is rarely the number you end up paying. Four line items catch people out, and none of them appear at the point of booking.
The security deposit
Blocked against your card for the rental period and released days after return. On a premium vehicle this can tie up a meaningful amount of credit while you travel.
Insurance excess
Most self-drive policies carry an excess you pay before cover begins. A kerbed alloy or a cracked bumper in traffic is usually paid entirely by you.
Fuel policy and the return window
Return the car below the agreed fuel level, or late, and refuelling and late-return charges apply at the operator’s rate, not the pump rate.
Traffic violations
Automated challans are issued against the registration and passed to you, often weeks after the trip has ended and long after you have stopped thinking about it.

The value of a chauffeur is not really the driving. It is everything the driver absorbs on your behalf.

Where self-drive genuinely wins
There is no point pretending otherwise. A self-drive car is the better product when:
- The route is the point. Coastal Goa, the Konkan, Coorg, Ladakh, the Nilgiris — roads people travel to drive.
- The itinerary is undecided. If you want to change plans at 11pm with nobody to inform, a key in your pocket is simpler.
- The stay is long and mostly stationary. Two weeks in one town with occasional short trips does not justify a chauffeur on standby.
- You want privacy above all. Some journeys are personal, and a third person in the car changes them.
An honest recommendation
If your trip matches any of the four points above, book a self-drive operator. We would rather you had the right vehicle than the wrong one from us. Come back to us for the airport run at either end — that is the leg where a chauffeur pays for itself.
Where a chauffeur genuinely wins
Equally, there are trips where self-drive is a false economy. The pattern is consistent: whenever arriving matters more than travelling, or the route is complicated, or someone else is watching.

The regulatory difference most travellers miss
This is the part that rarely appears in a comparison article, and it is the part that causes the most trouble on the road.
A chauffeur-driven vehicle from a licensed operator runs on a commercial registration with a commercial permit, driven by a holder of a commercial driving licence, under a commercial insurance policy. That combination is what legally allows the vehicle to carry paying passengers, cross state boundaries on an authorised permit, and enter locations where private vehicles are restricted.
A self-drive rental is a different legal arrangement. You become the driver of record. Your licence, your liability, your responsibility for the vehicle’s condition. For an Indian resident with a valid licence this is straightforward. For a visitor, it means carrying an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, and accepting that any dispute on the road is yours to resolve.
Practical consequence
If your itinerary crosses state lines — Delhi to Jaipur, Mumbai to Pune, Bengaluru to Mysuru — a chauffeured commercial vehicle deals with entry taxes and permits as routine. On a self-drive booking, that paperwork becomes yours at the border, usually at the least convenient moment.
How to decide in sixty seconds
Is anyone judging your arrival?
A client, a venue, a wedding party, a camera. If yes, book a chauffeur. This is the single strongest signal.
Does the route cross a state line or run over 250 km in a day?
If yes, a chauffeur is usually cheaper once permits, fatigue and your own time are counted honestly.
Will you need to work, take calls or prepare while moving?
If yes, self-drive costs you the entire journey in lost working time.
Is the driving itself something you are looking forward to?
If yes — and none of the above apply — book self-drive and enjoy it.

No. KTC is a chauffeur-driven operator only. Every vehicle we supply comes with a trained, verified professional driver. If you specifically need a self-drive car, you will need a dedicated self-drive rental company.
Is a chauffeur-driven car more expensive than self-drive in India?
On the headline day rate, usually yes. Once you add the security deposit, insurance excess, fuel policy, parking, interstate permits and the value of your own driving time, the gap narrows considerably — and on business or multi-city trips a chauffeur often works out cheaper in real terms.
Can a foreign visitor rent a car in India?
For self-drive, you generally need a valid licence from your home country together with an International Driving Permit, and you become fully liable for the vehicle. Most international visitors choose chauffeur-driven instead, because Indian traffic conditions and interstate paperwork are difficult to take on for the first time.
Who pays traffic fines on a chauffeur-driven booking?
The operator does. Challans are issued against the vehicle registration and handled by us as the fleet owner. On a self-drive rental, they are passed on to you as the driver of record.
Can I hire a chauffeur-driven car for a single airport transfer?
Yes. Point-to-point airport transfers are one of our most common bookings, and include flight tracking, complimentary waiting time and meet-and-greet at arrivals.
What happens if the car breaks down mid-journey?
On a chauffeured booking it is our problem, not yours — we dispatch a replacement vehicle from the nearest location. On a self-drive rental you deal with roadside assistance yourself, and the delay is absorbed by your schedule.
